One of my favourite of the things I love about photographing people is hearing their stories. A photo shoot with me usually involves lots of talking, as that’s how I get people to relax. I ask my subjects plenty of questions and before they know it they are halfway through the shoot!
I recently had the pleasure of meeting Madeline and Tom. When Madeline called to make the booking I asked her what the occasion for the portrait shoot was and she said that they would like to make a gift for their family. Madeline and Tom have 7 children and some grandchildren. The pair wanted to have a beautiful portrait for their kids to remember them by. What an wonderful gift!
The day of the shoot was Madeline’s 77th birthday, and Tom is a spritely 82. They met more than 50 years ago when Tom, a then mechanic, fixed the beautiful ‘english rose’ Madeline’s car for her. Tom invited Madeline to go and watch some car racing and they have been together ever since.
This gorgeous couple are still very much sweethearts and in great shape! They wanted to show how ‘young’ and fit they still are and insisted on sitting on the ground. I love the energy and casual feel of this shot. We did take pictures in some other poses but this was the favourite.
Many people talk about having family or portrait photos done and just don’t actually get around to having them taken. It doesn’t have to be a scary exercise – it can actually be fun! And if the thought of being in a studio under lights puts you off, you can choose to have the photos taken somewhere that you find more comfortable, a favourite place such as the beach, or a park, or in your back garden at home.
You don’t have to get all dressed up either, you can keep it casual in jeans and a t-shirt. Some people however, prefer a more formal look.
Madeline is also a practising physiotherapist, which I’m sure is why she is still so supple, and took the opportunity to have some ‘head shots’ done while she was with me. This is a lovely natural shot and Madeline’s facial expression tells us that she is knowledgeable and trustworthy. The style of physiotherapy that she is trained in is “Feldenkrais” – a “body mind improvement system” and you can find more information at www.marvellousmovement.com. I hope that you’ll see her new photo on her site very soon!
